Dropbox Announces Shutdown of Password Manager Service in March: What Users Need to Know

Dropbox, a leading provider of cloud-based storage solutions, has announced its intention to discontinue its password management application, Dropbox Passwords, following five years of operation. Launched in 2020, the app was initially integrated into the family plan subscription.
In a statement, Dropbox cited the need to focus on enhancing core product features as the reason for this decision. This potential lack of popularity relative to expectations could be indicative of strong competition from established password managers such as 1Password, NordPass, Proton Pass, and other top-tier options.
The phase-out process commences on August 28, during which the mobile app and browser extension will transition to read-only functionality. Consequently, users will no longer be able to add new passwords or edit existing credentials from this date.
For a period of approximately two weeks following the transition to read-only mode, users will still be able to download their existing password data. Autofill functionality will also be disabled on August 28, significantly limiting the tool’s usability.
On September 11, the mobile app will be officially closed, leaving only the browser extension operational for an additional month. The final date for accessing Dropbox Passwords services is October 28, after which all entries will be deleted.
Users are advised to export their passwords by October 28, 2025, to preserve access to their data. Dropbox advises transitioning to 1Password as a recommended alternative.
To facilitate the transfer of password data to an alternative tool, navigate to the Dropbox Passwords browser extension by clicking on your profile picture or initials. Then, select Preferences > Account > Export, and confirm the export of the CSV file. A similar process can be followed in the mobile app through the cog icon for settings, followed by Export, and then confirming the download.
