WhatsApp to Expand Reach with Cross-Platform Messaging Feature for Non-Users

WhatsApp, a globally prevalent messaging platform owned by Meta, is poised to further expand its user base with an innovative feature that enables individuals without existing WhatsApp accounts to participate in conversations.
The new functionality, discovered within the latest Android beta by WABetaInfo, allows users with active WhatsApp accounts to initiate conversations, thereby generating a unique link that can be distributed via various channels, including SMS, email, or even competing messaging services. Upon receiving this link, recipients can access an end-to-end encrypted chat window where they can exchange messages.
It should be noted that the beta version of the feature indicates limitations in terms of media sharing and group chat participation. At present, it appears that features such as photo/video sharing or voice/video calls are not yet supported, nor is it possible to join a group chat via this method.
The duration of these guest conversations remains uncertain; it’s unclear whether users can re-engage in the same conversation at a later time or if they will need to be re-invited to a new chat to utilize the feature again.
This development coincides with WhatsApp’s efforts to comply with EU interoperability regulations, which have previously led to integrations with services such as Signal. Additionally, this feature may serve to attract potential users who have positive experiences through guest chats and subsequently choose to download the full app.
While the feature is still in beta stage, it is essential to approach these developments cautiously, as WhatsApp has yet to officially confirm its launch.
