Sonos Roam Overheating Issue: Users Warned to Avoid Long-Term Charging After Device Damage Reports

The Sonos Roam speaker has experienced overheating issues in some cases, leading to damage to the USB-C charging port. Reports of this issue have surfaced on Reddit, with several users sharing evidence of their speakers overheating.

One user posted photos of the damage sustained by their speaker, prompting other Roam owners to share similar experiences. The thread shows at least three recent cases, with older reports dating back to earlier in 2025. This problem does not appear to be a new issue, as some affected users have reported that Sonos has acknowledged the damage and replaced their speakers.

Sonos stated to Bloomberg that it has seen a small number of impacted customers. A spokesperson said, “We’ve closely tracked a limited number of reports involving the USB-C charging connection on some first-generation Sonos Roam speakers.” The company added that while the overall incidence rate is low and environmental conditions seem to play a role, steps have been taken to reduce the likelihood of this issue. These steps include software updates and hardware improvements.

To minimize the risk of overheating, users should exercise caution when recharging their Sonos Roam speakers and avoid leaving them unattended for extended periods. It’s also recommended that users download the latest software updates to ensure their speaker is up-to-date with any improvements made by Sonos.

At this time, there are no reports of the same problem happening to the Sonos Roam 2 or Sonos Roam SL. The company no longer sells the original Roam speaker, which was first launched in 2021, as it has been replaced by the second-generation model.

Sonos recently appointed a new CEO in an effort to steer the company through a challenging period following a tumultuous year. The brand released a new app in 2024 that was met with criticism from many Sonos owners due to the reduction of features available.
