Duolingo CEO Defends AI Transition Amid Criticism: F-R-A-I-Days Signals Embrace of Artificial Intelligence

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn clarified remarks he made earlier this year about the language learning platform becoming an “AI-first company.” Von Ahn noted that there was no internal controversy regarding the shift towards AI, but acknowledged external criticism suggesting that Duolingo was solely profit-driven or intended to replace human employees.
However, von Ahn assured that Duolingo has never reduced its full-time workforce and has no plans to do so in the future. Although there have been adjustments to the contractor workforce, he explained that this had always fluctuated based on the company’s needs.
Despite the criticism, which does not appear to have significantly affected Duolingo’s financial performance, von Ahn remains optimistic about AI’s potential. In fact, members of the Duolingo team dedicate their Friday mornings to exploring and experimenting with artificial intelligence technologies. Von Ahn playfully referred to these sessions as “f-r-A-I-days,” expressing his uncertainty over the correct pronunciation.
