OpenAI Updates GPT-5 for a More Approachable and Friendlier Chat Experience

OpenAI unveiled an update for its latest model on Friday, aiming to make it more inviting and personable.

The much-awaited GPT-5, launched earlier, experienced a rollout that CEO Sam Altman acknowledged was “more challenging than anticipated,” with some users expressing preferences for the previous model, GPT-4o.

In an attempt to alleviate these concerns, OpenAI is implementing changes designed to make GPT-5 more engaging. According to the company, these alterations will result in a more welcoming experience, characterized by phrases such as “Good question” and “Great start,” without resorting to excessive flattery.

In a social media post, OpenAI explained that these subtle modifications would not lead to an increase in sycophancy compared to the previous GPT-5 personality.

At a recent gathering with journalists, OpenAI executives emphasized their vision for the company beyond GPT-5; however, the initial launch’s turbulence remained a prominent topic of discussion. As for the model’s interactivity, VP Nick Turley stated that GPT-5 was “extremely direct,” but the upcoming update will, as recently announced, lend it a warmer tone.
