Microsoft Enforces Weekly App Updates in Microsoft Store

Microsoft has implemented changes to its store updates policy for apps downloaded via the marketplace, mandating automatic app updates that were previously optional. As reported by Neowin and initially observed by German website Deskmodder, these modifications have significantly reduced the options available when delaying individual app updates.
The Microsoft Store settings now only allow for a short delay in updating apps, which can be achieved by navigating to Settings > App updates and toggling the switch on the right-hand side. A pop-up notification appears stating, “You may pause automatic updates temporarily. Please note that pausing could result in missing essential app updates from developers.”
Users are then presented with five options for delay duration, ranging from one week to a maximum of five weeks. This policy shift mirrors Microsoft’s approach towards operating system updates, as it previously allowed indefinite pauses but now limits the pause period to a maximum of 35 days following the software’s release.
The primary motivation behind this change is enhanced security. By setting an upper limit of five weeks, Microsoft aims to provide users with sufficient time to install updates at optimal moments rather than during critical projects using specific software. This move also ensures that users don’t miss out on security-focused changes that improve app safety over time.
It is worth noting that this policy applies exclusively to apps downloaded directly from the Microsoft Store. Users who prefer not to adhere to this change may consider utilizing alternative sources for their applications, although delaying updates indefinitely could potentially result in missing crucial security updates.
While these modifications may raise concerns for some users, it is essential to prioritize app security and stay updated with the latest changes for a secure and seamless user experience. Stay tuned for further developments as this story continues to evolve.
