Microsoft Hints at Cheaper Xbox Cloud Gaming Tier

Microsoft’s cloud gaming platform, xCloud, integrated with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, continues to thrive according to recent comments from the company. In a latest podcast, Jason Ronald, Microsoft’s VP of Next Generation, highlighted that many players utilize Game Pass Ultimate for accessing the cloud, either as their primary means or an additional option for on-the-go gaming.
Ronald further stated, “This opens up the opportunity to make it more affordable and accessible to players, whether that’s expanding into new regions or exploring new ways to access the cloud.” While these remarks don’t confirm a cheaper alternative cloud gaming tier, they do indicate Microsoft’s potential plans in this direction.
Last year, an executive hinted at the possibility of offering an ad-supported game streaming tool, allowing players to access games without any charges. Although no concrete updates have been shared regarding this development over the past 18 months.
A report from Windows Central in July 2023 suggested that Microsoft might introduce a less expensive subscription plan for cloud gaming separate from its Ultimate tier. Making cloud gaming available at a lower price point could potentially attract more players towards Xbox, as Game Pass Ultimate currently costs $19.99 per month, which is pricier than the top tier PlayStation Plus package ($17.99) that also offers cloud gaming services.
Though Microsoft’s plans are not yet finalized, Ronald’s comments about regions suggest that this service might not be accessible in the US initially.
