Montana Introduces Digital IDs in Apple Wallet at TSA Checkpoints

Montana becomes the latest state to join the digital ID movement by supporting driver’s licenses and state IDs within the Apple Wallet app. This convenience-boosting feature allows residents to add their identification documents to the Wallet app, which can be used for age-restricted purchases and TSA checkpoints at select locations.
To utilize this service, navigate to the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap the plus sign in the top right corner. From there, choose the type of ID and your corresponding state, then follow the on-screen instructions to scan both sides of your ID. A selfie will also be required as part of the verification process. Once approved, your digital ID will be accessible within the Wallet app.
At present, digital IDs can be verified at over 250 airports across the nation, including Helena Regional Airport (HLN), according to a TSA press release. In Montana, participating businesses can verify IDs using the state’s Montana Mobile ID Verifier app for both iOS and Android devices. By year-end, digital IDs will also be accepted by the Montana Highway Patrol.
While mobile IDs offer increased convenience, it is still necessary to carry a physical driver’s license as officials may require one during verification processes. This update follows Montana joining the ranks of Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, New Mexico, and Ohio in offering digital ID support within the Apple Wallet app. Additional states, including Mississippi, Illinois, Connecticut, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Utah, and West Virginia, are also anticipated to adopt this feature soon.
