OpenAI and Partners Oracle & SoftBank Announce Plans for Seven Gigawatt AI Data Center Expansion Across US

Tech firm OpenAI has unveiled plans to construct five new AI-focused data centers across the U.S., partnering with Oracle and SoftBank for the project named Stargate. These new facilities are set to boost Stargate’s total capacity to an impressive 7 gigawatts, sufficient energy to power approximately 5 million homes.

Three of these locations will be developed in collaboration with Oracle, situated in Shackelford County, Texas, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, and a yet-to-be-disclosed Midwest location. The remaining two data centers will be built in partnership with SoftBank, one in Lordstown, Ohio, and another in Milam County, Texas.

These upcoming Stargate AI data centers are an integral part of OpenAI’s expansive infrastructure development, aimed at enhancing the training and deployment of more advanced AI models. On Monday, OpenAI disclosed a $100 billion investment from Nvidia to acquire the chipmaker’s AI processors and build additional AI data centers.
