Meta Expands into Voice Technology with Acquisition of Play AI

In a significant move, Meta Corporation has announced its acquisition of Play AI, a leading startup specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) technology for generating human-like voices. This acquisition, confirmed by a Meta spokesperson to Bloomberg, is set to be finalized next week with the integration of the entire Play AI team into the company.

In an internal memo, Meta highlighted that Play AI’s expertise in creating natural voices and their voice creation platform align seamlessly with Meta’s ongoing projects, particularly within AI Characters, Meta AI, Wearables, and audio content creation.

This latest acquisition underscores Meta’s growing commitment to artificial intelligence. Previously, the company has made substantial investments in this field, such as aggressive recruitment from OpenAI and a strategic deal with Scale AI that resulted in Alexandr Wang, the CEO of Scale AI, joining Meta to head a new division focused on superintelligence.

Although the financial details of the acquisition have yet to be disclosed, previous reports by Bloomberg suggested negotiations between the two companies were underway.
