SpaceX’s Starlink Cellular Service Launches in Canada via Rogers Carrier: Boosting Connectivity Nationwide

In the wake of its successful US introduction, SpaceX’s cellular Starlink service is now expanding to Canada through strategic partnership with mobile carrier Rogers Communications.

On Tuesday, Rogers initiated the provision of satellite-to-phone services as a complimentary beta trial for all Canadian users, emulating T-Mobile’s move earlier this year to offer similar trials in the US market. This innovative cellular Starlink technology utilizes orbiting satellites to transmit data to phones situated in cellular dead zones, ensuring connectivity even in the absence of nearby towers. Initially, the service supports only SMS text messaging; however, SpaceX intends to progressively integrate voice and video call capabilities, as well as data services.

Rogers has christened its implementation “Rogers Satellite,” offering coverage across the southern half of Canada due to SpaceX’s ongoing efforts to deploy additional satellites for extended northern coverage. The company emphasized that this new technology significantly expands wireless network coverage, reaching over 5.4 million square kilometers within Canada—approximately 2.5 times more than any other carrier.

Canadian users, including those on competing carriers, are encouraged to enroll in the free beta trial, which will continue through October. The satellite service is compatible with subscribers from rival carriers via a secondary eSIM, though currently, Rogers Satellite only supports specific devices such as iPhone 13 to 16 models, Samsung Galaxy S25 series, and four Motorola handsets.

Upon the conclusion of the beta trial in October, Rogers Satellite will be offered at no additional cost to customers on the Rogers Ultimate Plan, with a broader availability for Canadians priced at $15/month (US$11 per month). Participants in the beta trial will enjoy a $5/month discount for the first 12 months.

It is essential to note that upon the conclusion of the beta trial, Rogers will initiate charges for access to the satellite service.

The cellular Starlink service is entering an increasingly competitive landscape in satellite-to-phone services. Apple has already introduced satellite connectivity exclusively for iPhones, while Texas-based AST SpaceMobile plans to unveil its competing solution through AT&T and Verizon as early as next year.
