Potential Delay Looms for AST SpaceMobile’s Prototype Satellite Launch: Impacts and Updates

Potential Delay Looms for AST SpaceMobile’s Prototype Satellite Launch: Impacts and Updates

In the realm of satellite communication, AST SpaceMobile is striving to challenge SpaceX’s Starlink cellular system. However, a setback looms with the impending launch of a crucial prototype satellite, FM1. Initially scheduled for launch this month through India’s space agency, ISRO, the delay could impact AST SpaceMobile’s timeline for delivering satellite connectivity to mobile devices.

ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan recently indicated that the launch may not occur as planned, with local media reporting a potential three-to-four month delay. The Hindu newspaper suggests that the satellite is expected to arrive in India in September. Such a delay could significantly affect AST’s timeline for delivering satellite connectivity, given that the FM1 prototype serves to test the company’s second-generation BlueBird satellite design, which is approximately three times larger than its existing five BlueBird satellites currently in orbit.

AST SpaceMobile has yet to comment on the specific launch date of the FM1 or if it is considering alternative launch providers. The company has also mentioned the development of an FM2 in FCC documents. Detailed updates are anticipated during an earnings call scheduled for Monday, Aug. 11.

According to previous declarations made to the US Federal Communications Commission, AST intends to launch up to 20 satellites, including FM1, by the end of this year. The objective is to commence a commercial satellite service as early as 2026, providing an innovative means of connectivity for consumers on AT&T and Verizon in cellular dead zones.

However, AST has previously estimated that between 45 to 60 satellites are necessary for continuous service across the United States. Regulatory approval from the FCC is also a prerequisite for commercial operations, while SpaceX’s cellular Starlink service has already been launched through partner T-Mobile.
