Google Translate’s New Practice Feature Could Revolutionize Language Learning with AI-Generated Personalized Lessons
Google Translate, a popular language translation tool for millions, might soon offer users the ability to learn a new language from scratch. While no official announcement has been made, Android Authority recently uncovered a long-anticipated Practice feature hidden within the latest version of the app. This revelation marks the first time the tool has been seen in action.
The site experimented with AI-driven features within Translate, as demonstrated in the screen recording below. The app indicates that these features are currently in beta testing.
Upon exploration, it is revealed that Google Translate will utilize AI to create personalized lessons tailored to the user’s preferred language of study. Presently, English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese are supported, though only French and Spanish are fully functional as per Android Authority.
Users can select their level of proficiency – Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced – and practice scenarios will be presented for rehearsal, such as professional settings or ways to describe a job. Users also have the option to create custom scenarios using a prompt.
This feature could prove beneficial for individuals preparing for an upcoming trip, allowing them to tailor a crash course in the target language. For example, one could focus on skiing-related terminology before hitting the slopes. Upon completion of a lesson, users are prompted to adjust the difficulty level for future lessons to make it more challenging or less demanding.
Android Authority also noticed that the app mentions a “trial period,” suggesting it may initially be offered free of charge but could eventually require a subscription fee, potentially as part of Google’s premium Gemini package. As with all leaked information, this development should be taken with caution; there is no guarantee that Google will ultimately release it.
In April, Google began testing other language-learning tools using AI within its Labs projects, but these were separate from the official Translate apps and focused on smaller games designed to test a user’s existing knowledge rather than teaching from scratch.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) appears poised to play a significant role in the future of language learning. Earlier this year, Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn announced plans to transition the company into an “AI-first” entity. At the time, he mentioned eliminating all contract workers to focus on AI-generated content. However, after user backlash, von Ahn reconsidered his decision and subsequently informed the Financial Times that he did not anticipate such a strong response.
