In a significant development, Google unveiled a cutting-edge AI-driven search feature tailored for travelers seeking flight deals amidst ongoing debates surrounding the tech giant’s dominance in travel discovery and potential stifling of competition.

Dubbed Flight Deals, this innovative tool is integrated within Google Flights and aims to assist “flexible travelers” in discovering cheaper airfares. Users can input natural language queries into a search bar, specifying their travel preferences, and the AI algorithm presents corresponding options.

Examples of such queries could include “affordable week-long trip during winter to a city known for its culinary delights, with nonstop flights only” or “10-day ski vacation at a premier resort with fresh powder.”

The tool leverages advanced AI models to decipher the intricacies of user preferences and scans live Google Flights data to display relevant results. Google disclosed this information in a blog post.

Regulators, including the European Commission, are scrutinizing Google’s practices related to the potential bias towards its own search products, such as Google Flights, which could potentially harm competition. The EU is considering enforcing actions under the Digital Markets Act aimed at curbing the power of prominent tech platforms. In response, Google’s parent company Alphabet is reportedly planning to propose modifications to address regulators’ concerns, including introducing a price-comparison box in search results.

Initially, Flight Deals has been released in beta format, with plans to expand its availability across the United States, Canada, and India over the subsequent week. Google aims to gather feedback and explore the potential of AI in streamlining travel planning during this period.

The company did not immediately respond to queries regarding the specific AI models powering the tool, data sources utilized, or privacy measures implemented.

This move signifies a broader experiment as Google endeavors to compete with prominent AI players like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity by integrating generative AI into travel search. Notably, competitors such as Booking.com, Expedia, and Indian travel aggregator MakeMyTrip have already integrated AI to facilitate trip planning, making Google’s entry somewhat late. However, with its vast scale and reach, the company has the potential to pose a significant challenge, provided the tool proves effective and gains popularity.

It is worth noting that the classic Google Flights interface will remain operational. In an additional update, Google will offer users the option to exclude basic economy fares for domestic trips within the U.S. and Canada.
