Spotify Introduces Direct Messaging for Music Sharing

Spotify’s latest update introduces a new Messages feature, designed to enhance user interaction and content sharing within the app. The feature allows users aged 16 and above on both Free and Premium plans to send direct messages and discuss music, podcasts, and audiobooks.
The Messages tab is accessible from the Home section of the app. Users can initiate conversations by tapping their profile icon and selecting “New message.” Contacts suggested are based on past sharing activity, as well as those from the same Family or Duo plan.
Users have the option to accept or reject incoming message requests. Once accepted, they can communicate back and forth, share Spotify content, and react with emojis. The Messages feature has also been integrated into the Now Playing View, allowing users to easily share content with suggested contacts.
Spotify emphasizes that the new feature is intended to complement, not replace, existing social media integrations such as Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and TikTok. Chats are currently one-on-one and encrypted for security. If users receive inappropriate messages, they can report them by holding down the text, selecting “Report,” and choosing an option that best describes the violation.
The platform’s existing rules for illegal and harmful content apply to its messaging feature as well. Spotify plans to refine the Messages experience for more users in the coming months, with the intention of benefiting artists by increasing discovery and engagement.
