Apple Unveils iPhone 17 Lineup and Ultrathin Air Model at September 9 Event

Prepare for Apple’s upcoming hardware event scheduled on Tuesday, September 9th. This much-anticipated event at Apple Park is expected to unveil the latest iPhone 17 series and the next-generation Apple Watch. For those unable to attend Cupertino, Apple will live-stream the event on its official website.
The intriguing invitation and a tweet from CEO Tim Cook hint at an “awe-inspiring” event, potentially alluding to the rumored ultrathin and lightweight iPhone Air. This innovative device is anticipated to be the highlight of the event, taking inspiration from the MacBook Air with its lightweight design. However, it may come with potential trade-offs like lower battery life.
The iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max are expected to launch alongside the iPhone Air. The Pro models are rumored to have superior camera systems compared to their less expensive counterparts. Additionally, reports suggest that the Pro versions could feature an orange color option, hinted at by the orange outline in the event’s invitation logo.
The upcoming Apple Watch lineup is also expected to receive upgrades, with the Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3 potentially being unveiled.
Last year, Apple skipped a major Ultra hardware upgrade, offering only cosmetic changes such as new bands and color options. However, this year, an Ultra 3 with larger dimensions is rumored to be in development.
There have been whispers about Apple’s planned foldable phone, although it may not make its debut until next year. If released, the foldable iPhone (codenamed V68) will reportedly open into a small tablet, similar to Samsung’s foldable devices, featuring four cameras and relying on eSIM technology. It is also speculated to use Touch ID instead of Face ID, like the iPad.
If you are not in the market for a new iPhone, iOS 26 is expected to support smartphones dating back to the iPhone 11. Apple will likely announce the release date for the stable version of iOS 26 (alongside iPadOS 26 and macOS 26) at its event next month.
It remains unclear if Apple will introduce any AI-specific hardware features during this event. The company has faced challenges in developing Apple Intelligence, which debuted last year on the iPhone 16 and 15 Pros, more than a month after their release. The underwhelming features have led to false advertising lawsuits, and Apple is reportedly considering integrating AI models from rival companies like OpenAI or Anthropic.
If Apple Intelligence had been successful with the iPhone 16, it would seem like a natural progression for the iPhone 17. However, at WWDC in June, Apple seemed to focus more on its core hardware capabilities, hinting that it may lean heavily on these strengths during the September 9th event.
