Bret Taylor: We’re in an AI Bubble Similar to the Dot-Com Boom, But It Will Create Economic Value Despite Losses

In a recent interview with The Verge, Bret Taylor, chairman of OpenAI and CEO of AI agent startup Sierra, was asked about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s assertion that significant financial losses could occur in the field of artificial intelligence. Taylor mirrored Altman’s perspective, suggesting that the current AI landscape resembles a bubble. However, like Altman, he expressed little concern over this situation.
Taylor posited, “AI has the potential to fundamentally alter the economic landscape, much like the internet did in the past. However, we are also experiencing a bubble where numerous individuals and companies may face substantial financial losses.” He went on to draw parallels between today’s AI sector and the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s, suggesting that although many businesses faltered when the bubble burst, “the people in 1999 were essentially correct.”
